Announcing New and Special Features at the iNACOL Symposium

The iNACOL Symposium is just a couple of weeks away. As you prepare to join us in Palm Springs, here are a few exciting opportunities beyond the outstanding line-up of speakers and sessions that has been assembled.

Yoga
You're invited to an invigorating morning yoga class with Peace Love Yoga Palm Springs, on Tuesday, October 29 & Wednesday, October 30, 6:00–6:30 am on the East Lawn. This 30-minute, Vinyasa-inspired class will incorporate mindful movement (asana) and breathwork (pranayama) in an energizing flow that will leave you refreshed and ready for your day. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before the start of class to give yourself time to find a spot. See you on the mat! (Mats are provided.)

The iNACOL Voices Hub is an interactive, creative center for capturing your thoughts, telling your story, sharing your ideas, and learning from each other. This book is about addressing the college-choosing problem. The rankings, metrics, analytics, college visits, and advice that we use today to help us make these decisions are out of step with the progress individual students are trying to make. They don’t give students and families the information and context they need to make such a high-stakes decision about whether and where to get an education. Choosing College offers guidance and true options on how to successfully choose your pathway.

Film Screening | Rise: Voice of a New Generation by Jon Long
Join us Tuesday, October 29, at 6:00 pm in the Mojave Learning Center to view the film, Rise: Voice of a New Generation, which captures the story of One Stone, a one-of-a-kind, student-led high school in Boise, Idaho, that is reinventing education and changing the balance of power to put students in charge of their own learning. The film documents the journey of students and coaches at the school as they launch what has been named one of the most progressive schools in America by both Alan Gottlieb (co-author of America Succeeds’ 2017 report Age of Agility) and Tom Vander Ark (CEO of Getting Smart). Follow the story of one of the only schools in the country run by students who are exploring a new way forward, where their voices shape the future of education and the world. Seven States with Enabling Policies to Support Innovations in K-12 Education to Offer More Personalized Approaches and Competency-Based Systems

Which states lead in helping districts and schools create more personalized learning for students? This is a frequent question we are asked by state policymakers. Although there are different state policy entry points for this work, the examples from seven states illustrate some of the state policy strategies that support personalized learning approaches and competency-based education systems, including:

Creating pilots,
Allowing innovation zones,
Opening Offices of Innovation to support professional learning communities statewide,
Supporting competency-based education systems, and
Redefining student success more broadly through Profile of a Graduate initiatives with communities.

There is tremendous interest in K-12 education for more personalized learning and competency-based education systems. When designed to ensure equity, these new education models hold promise to prepare all students for success in college, career, and civic life with the skills, knowledge, and competencies they need.

Pre-conference session topics range from the science of learning and professional learning to educational equity and getting started with student-centered learning models. A Note about the Opening Keynote at the 2019 iNACOL Symposium

Please note that, unlike previous years, this year's opening keynote will take place on Monday, October 28th, 3:30-5:15 p.m. Pacific Time, following the pre-conference workshops. Once the keynote concludes, we will make a very special announcement that you won't want to miss. The President's Welcome Reception will immediately follow in the Innovation Corner.
