Dear Colleagues, 

In September CompetencyWorks published two articles from Sonn Sam, Big Picture Learning’s Regional Director for the Southern USA:

  • Structuring Schools to Enable Deep, Student-Centered Learning in Real-World Settings provides strategies and conditions—such as visionary leadership, staffing, coaching, and resources—needed for deep engagement with community partners.
  • Supporting Deeper Learning Through High-Quality Internship Projects walks through one student’s internship experience and time-tested strategies such as the Project Development Tool, Project Rubric, and weekly one-on-one meetings that make student projects successful.

CompetencyWorks also shared Conditions for Innovation: The 5 C’s, originally published on the Transcend blog, which describes the five conditions—Conviction, Clarity, Capacity, Coalition, and Culture—required for extraordinary, equitable learning environments to take root and how to nurture their growth.

What’s New In K-12 Competency-Based Education provides brief reviews of innovations, research, resources, and professional learning opportunities in the field. These include a report on elevating student voice, strategies for onboarding teachers in personalized schools, research on promoting growth mindset, and more. 

Last, two upcoming iNACOL events were announced:

  • The Strategic Reflection on the Field of Competency-Based Education webinar will take place on October 1 from 2:00-3:00 pm ET. Join the webinar to gain an understanding of developments in the field and insights to inform the future direction of competency-based education.
  • The esteemed keynote speakers for the iNACOL Symposium will inform, inspire, and propel thinking around powerful, student-centered learning models, while examining the role of education in the future. Brief bios of each speaker are presented. The Symposium will take place October 28-31 in Palm Springs, California.
