Dear Colleagues,

Happy 2019! To begin the new year, CompetencyWorks offered three blog posts from futurist Katherine Prince of KnowledgeWorks about challenges and opportunities emerging in education. You can read them starting here:

  • An Era Shift Raises Big Questions for Education – Part 1

An era shift was also happening at CompetencyWorks, with Chris Sturgis wrapping up six years of leading the initiative, and new iNACOL Research Director Eliot Levine stepping in. In his first post, Eliot shared some details about his research and teaching career, as well as welcoming your feedback and suggestions for blog topics and guest authors:

  • Introducing the new CompetencyWorks Director

In December, Chris provided series of posts on two essential topics in competency-based education. The first series is on the book Quality Principles for Competency-Based Education, new from iNACOL and CompetencyWorks, which offers a set of guideposts for schools and districts. (You can download it for free or purchase a hard copy.) You can link here to posts on each of the 16 quality principles:

  • 16 Quality Principles to Guide Implementation to Competency-Based Education

The second series is based on Chris’ three weeks of school visits in New Zealand, a country whose educational system offers many insights for the development of competency-based education in the United States and other countries. You can read the series starting here:

  • Baskets of Knowledge from Aotearoa New Zealand

To Chris Sturgis, a champion of competency-based education, we offer deep thanks from the CompetencyWorks community. Your mark on our work, and our lives, will be felt for many years to come.
