Dear Colleagues:

CompetencyWorks has a number of contributing authors who are innovators and practitioners openly sharing a variety of perspectives in competency education. We are grateful for their dedication to knowledge sharing and commitment to doing what’s right for students. Here are a few articles from our contributing authors:

  1. Connecting the Dots: Aligning Efforts to Support Teachers and Students in New Hampshire, by Jonathan Vander Els
  2. Lessons from a Social Studies Teacher: The Power of Interdisciplinary Work in a Competency-Based School, by Donna Harvey-Moseley
  3. Encouraging Learning Risks and Growth, by James Rickabaugh

We also value what others are saying and repost articles when they raise important issues and questions:

  1. Making Equity a First Principle of Personalized Learning, by Julia Freeland Fisher
  2. Learner-Centered Tip of the Week: A Move to Increase Agency, by Courtney Belolan
  3. Personalized Learning Worth Fighting For, by Karla Esparza-Phillips and Ace Parsi
  4. The Power of Grades, by Julianna Charles Brown and Meg Stentz
  5. Training Teachers for Competency-Based Learning Classrooms, by Sajan George

If you would like to become a CompetencyWorks contributing author, please contact Chris Sturgis at [email protected]. We are increasingly interested in the following topics as they relate to competency education: cultural responsiveness, pedagogy, re-engagement and alternative education, community engagement, teacher professional learning, and alignment with higher education.

Prior to the National Summit on K-12 Competency-Based Education, we will release four papers on the following key issues in the field of competency education:

  1. In Pursuit of Equality: A Framework for Equity Strategies in Competency-Based Education
  2. Fit for Purpose: Taking the Long View on Systems Change and Policy to Support Competency Education
  3. In Search of Efficacy: Defining the Elements of Quality in a Competency-Based System
  4. Meeting Students Where They Are

Stay tuned for these reports — we plan to release these as drafts in early June.
