Registration Now Open for the 2019 iNACOL Symposium

Attendee registration is now open for the iNACOL Symposium, which will run October 28-31, 2019 at the Palm Springs Convention Center under the theme "Shining a Light on the Future of Learning."

The annual conference is the premier learning conference for those driving the transformation of education systems and accelerating the advancement of breakthrough policies and practices to ensure high-quality learning for all. Experts, practitioners, educators, policymakers, researchers, innovators, and students gather and work to transform education.

The iNACOL Symposium includes tracks for competency education, assessment for learning, leadership, professional development, policy and advocacy, quality assurance, human capital, community engagement, research and many more.

Funding Challenges and Action Steps for Policymakers to Support Education Transformation

States and school districts around the nation are advancing policies to support the shift toward student-centered, personalized, competency-based education. iNACOL is frequently asked to offer guidance on how to fund this transformation, and to that end, we released State Funding Strategies to Support Education Innovation. The issue brief presented several case studies showing the diverse approaches states have used to resource their innovation initiatives. Policymakers can begin their resourcing approach by examining their state’s funding formulas and how they might pose barriers and challenges that limit the flexibility needed for innovative learning models.

The Role of School Libraries in School Transformation

In a learner-centered paradigm, libraries serve an important purpose, for one of their main commitments is to cultivate self-interest in learners and equip them with the skills to independently evaluate sources of information. Materials that libraries supply for students — books, computers, audiobooks, microfiche, etc. — are all just mediums for the transfer of information. Librarians act not only as guides to assist students in finding materials that are suitable to their academic goals and interests, but also as an arbiter of the sources to which students are given access.
