Invest in Educators as Learners in Competency-Based Education

Whether teachers are working individually within a classroom or as part of a team, competency-based schools are going to want to support teachers’ learning within the context of their specific set of students. Are students not catching on to the concept of numeracy? It’s possible they just need more time. It’s also possible that the teacher could improve their instructional skill in helping students to catch on to the concept. It’s a both/and. It’s always a both/and. Competency-based schools invest in teaching as inquiry so that teachers are supported in reflecting and questioning if there are ways that they are impacting student learning both positively or negatively.

What Leading Education Systems Around the Globe Are Doing to Transform Learning

When I went into UNESCO, and I asked what are the trends that you see? And they said, ‘Well nobody is stuck on a single indicator, Susan, for what learning looks like. In fact, we’re sending over a list for developing nations, developed nations, of 145 different indicators that you can look across multiple measures and see the progress in your education system because you want to think about continuous improvement and you want to think about what pathways you are opening up in the future for your students.’

Develop Processes for Ongoing Continuous Improvement and Organizational Learning in Competency-Based Education
Develop Processes for Ongoing Continuous Improvement and Organizational Learning in Competency-Based Education

I think that one can argue that every school, whether it is a traditional school or a personalized, competency-based one, should have processes for continuous improvement in place. It only makes sense that any organization should be in the process of improving. However, traditional schools and school systems are highly bureaucratic in nature. The emphasis is much more on compliance than it is on an organizational drive toward excellence.
