Announcing the Student Panel Keynote for the 2019 iNACOL Symposium

iNACOL is pleased to announce our Wednesday morning keynote. Please join us to hear from our student panel, including learners Aidyn Grice of Norris Academy (WI), Alyssia Leach of GripTape and University of Louisville, Elias Hernandez of River Springs School (CA), Landon Kreps of Alamosa High School, and Victoria Borunda of ACE Leadership High School, on Wednesday, October 30th from 8:00-9:15 am PT.

This keynote provides a forum to amplify the most critical of all voices in the work of transforming learning – the voices of students. Joining us from diverse backgrounds and experiences, these students will share their personal journey on how student-centered approaches to K-12 education have changed the way they learn, fostered greater ownership of their learning, and opened doors to pursue their personal and academic goals.

Virgel Hammonds, Chief Learning Officer at KnowledgeWorks, will facilitate a panel discussion with our student leaders of tomorrow in an unfiltered and honest conversation. The students will provide their first-hand accounts of what it’s like to reimagine their own education and illuminate their own paths forward.

Audience members – this is your chance to ask questions to students immersed in innovative learning. Send your questions to the students through Twitter using #iNACOL19.

Please join us at the iNACOL Symposium to hear from these students, nearly 200 thought-provoking sessions and unparalleled networking opportunities October 28-31, 2019 in Palm Springs. Learn more about our keynote speakers.

New Innovation Spotlight Episode – Assessments in Student-Centered Learning with Maria Worthen and Alexis Chambers
New Innovation Spotlight Episode – Assessments in Student-Centered Learning with Maria Worthen and Alexis Chambers

We’re pleased to announce the next episode in our recent podcast series, the Innovation Spotlight, featuring commentary and analysis at the leading edge of education systems change, hosted by Matthew Shea and Courtney Belolan. By popular demand, we introduce the podcast hosted by as a new medium to disseminate knowledge, collaborate with the field, and hold engaging conversations on the field’s toughest subjects.

In the latest episode, iNACOL Vice President for Federal and State Policy Maria Worthen and Policy Associate Alexis Chambers recently discussed challenges and opportunities to rethink assessments. In new models of teaching and learning, assessing what students know and can do looks very different from the traditional model of education.

"In a competency-based classroom environment that is personalized," said Worthen, "assessment can support individual student learning and achievement outcomes that matter."

Getting to the Heart of Equity in Education

"To disinherit someone means to prevent deliberately from inheriting something as by making a will. A disinheritance is intentional. It’s purposeful, and it’s planned. In this case, we’re talking about the will of our country. Our origin story tells us that the first people to hold the pen and draft the will of our country were land-owning, white men. And over time, more and more of us have tried to get ahold of the pen. And now the pen is in our hands."
