You can find the report\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.competencyworks.org\/resources\/making-mastery-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>. The report, authored by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.norapriest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nora Priest<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/redesignu.org\/about-us\/the-redesign-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Antonia Rudenstine<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.schools4future.org\/about-sff-new\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ephraim Weisstein,<\/a>\u00a0examines several issues through the collected experiences of the ten schools that participated in the Proficiency-based Pathways Project (PBP)\u00a0 with co-funding from NMEF and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The PBP grantees are Big Picture Learning, Boston Day and Evening Academy, Diploma Plus, Expeditionary Learning, MSAD #15 otherwise known as Gray -New Gloucester District in Maine, National Center for the Education and the Economy, and\u00a0Vergennes School District.<\/p>\n<p>Making Mastery Work provides insights into how the schools, all of which have different approaches and are at different stages of development as a competency-based model, are aligning their schools around learning. Topics include the creation of a transparent mastery and assessment system, time flexibility, curriculum and instruction, leadership for competency education development, and the role of data and information technology in a competency-based education model. We\u2019ll be offering webinars in January \u2013 March 2013 on these topics so you can hear from the innovators directly. Stay tuned!<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<em>Making Mastery Work<\/em>, the authors provide the key characteristics of competency education.\u00a0 This is an important addition to our understanding as it helps us to better comprehend the nature of competency education and guide us in implementation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key Characteristics of Competency Education<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1)<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Students progress at own pace<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Transparent system for tracking and reporting progress;<\/li>\n<li>Flexible, learner-centric use of time, often beyond standard school day and year; and<\/li>\n<li>Explicit methods for providing additional support or opportunities for learning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2)<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Graduation upon demonstration of mastery of a comprehensive list of competencies<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Courses designed around set of competencies aligned with Common Core State Standards;<\/li>\n<li>\u201cCredit\u201d awarded upon mastery of competencies associated with course or smaller module, based on summative assessments; and<\/li>\n<li>Transparent system for tracking and reporting progress<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3)<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Teachers skilled at facilitating differentiated learning environments<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Frequent formative assessments provide real-time feedback to students and teachers on progress toward competencies and help guide instruction; and<\/li>\n<li>Development of robust approaches to supporting students as they move through competencies, especially those who progress slowly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What do you think?\u00a0 Are these the key characteristics that you think about?
