{"id":2648,"date":"2012-12-07T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-12-07T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/aurora-institute.org\/blog\/cw_post\/competency-education-in-the-news\/"},"modified":"2020-02-05T12:49:32","modified_gmt":"2020-02-05T17:49:32","slug":"competency-education-in-the-news","status":"publish","type":"cw_post","link":"https:\/\/aurora-institute.org\/cw_post\/competency-education-in-the-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Competency Education in the News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aurora-institute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/michael-horn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-2560\" title=\"michael horn\" src=\"https:\/\/aurora-institute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/michael-horn.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"148\" height=\"107\" \/><\/a>Michael Horn in a post \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/michaelhorn\/2012\/12\/06\/could-competency-based-learning-save-the-common-core\/\">Could Competency-Based Learning Save the Common Core<\/a>?\u201d on Forbes website challenges us to think about assessments differently\u00a0 &#8212; instead of summative assessments at the end of the factory model of education, why not build it into the learning process so that we can be sure that students are learning every step of the way.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some other highlights of competency education in the news.<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Benjamin Riley, Director of Policy and Advocacy<em> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newschools.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">NewSchools Venture Fund<\/a>,<\/em> writes about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edsource.org\/today\/2012\/lindsay-unified-students-blazing-their-own-paths-to-higher-achievement\/23688#.UMJESoUZ_wg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lindsay Unified School District<\/a>, a finalist for RTT.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Tom Vander Ark tackles some of the concerns about competency education in his On Innovation blog <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/edweek\/on_innovation\/2012\/11\/answers_for_lessons_from_critics_of_competency-based_learning.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Answers For &amp; Lessons from Critics of Competency-based Learning <\/a>at Ed Week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ajc.com\/get-schooled-blog\/2012\/12\/04\/sen-chip-rogers-on-public-education-in-georgia-maybe-for-the-last-time-as-a-senator\/\">Atlanta Journal highlights Sen. Chip Rogers<\/a> comments on education including competency education: <em>American students spend roughly 50 minutes per class, 6-7 classes per day, 5 days per week and 180 days per year. At the end of this time, they \u201cmove on\u201d to the next grade. Essentially our system values \u201cseat time\u201d over \u201clearning\u201d. We can measure \u201cseat time\u201d easily; measuring educational achievement is more difficult.
