Proposals are due May 8, 2015.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Pushing the Field<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jan Yoskiwara writes about how competency-based education can move students further and faster through higher education systems, which is vital to create new opportunities and meet student and workforce needs. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/education-lab\/guest-community-colleges-figuring-out-how-to-move-students-further-and-faster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Read more<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The first post in Thomas Carey\u2019s series, titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/blogs\/higher-ed-beta\/collaboration-not-commoditization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Collaboration, not Commoditization<\/a>, discusses faculty emotional ownership in innovative teaching communities as a means to reduce obstacles to scaling teacher best practices.<\/li>\n<li>In the second post, Thomas Carey followed up his thoughts in the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/blogs\/higher-ed-beta\/innovative-knowledge-practice-networks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Innovative Knowledge-Practice Networks<\/a>, which focuses on emerging developments in course-related collaborations, using a repository of shared course resources.<!--more--><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>News<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Michael Horn and Paul Freedman coauthored <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edsurge.com\/n\/2015-04-15-ellucian-s-acquisition-and-the-new-lms-wars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ellucian\u2019s Acquisition and the New LMS Wars<\/a>, which announced that Ellucian acquired Helix Education\u2019s Learning Management System, one of the only LMS\u2019s designed to specifically support competency education.<\/li>\n<li>Political support is building to encourage and oversee higher education upstarts that don\u2019t look or act like colleges, such as online course providers and coding boot camps. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2015\/04\/09\/political-pressure-builds-new-accreditation-and-aid-pathway-upstart-providers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Read more from Paul Fain<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The U.S. Department of Education granted federal aid eligibility to two new direct assessment programs (Walden University and the Texas State College System), bringing the total to six institutions that are now approved for to implement direct assessment. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/quicktakes\/2015\/04\/15\/education-dept-approves-two-more-direct-assessment-programs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Read more<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Julian L. Alssid, Chief Workforce Strategist at College for America, wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/julian-l-alssid\/sparks-fly-competencybase_b_7063272.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sparks Fly: Competency-Based Education Catches<\/a>, which describes new successes and the current status of competency-based higher education.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Resources<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>AEI released two reports; the first is titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/publication\/employer-perspectives-on-competency-based-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Employer Perspectives on Competency-Based Education<\/a>, by Chip Franklin and Robert Lytle, which describes the outcomes of a survey of nearly 500 hiring managers at different companies to gauge awareness and obstacles to competency-based education.<\/li>\n<li>AEI released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/publication\/measuring-mastery-best-practices-for-assessment-in-competency-based-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Measuring mastery: Best practices for assessment in competency-based education<\/a>, by Katie Larsen McClarty and Matthew N. Gaertner.
