This webinar is free to attend, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inacol.org\/event\/personalized-learning-what-it-takes-to-get-started\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">please register to receive final log in details<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What Is Competency Education?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <a href=\"http:\/\/hechingerreport.org\/personalized-learning-is-especially-good-for-students-of-color\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Q&amp;A with Rebecca Wolfe<\/a>, Director of Students at the Center project and personalized learning advocate, discusses how personalized learning can help historically underserved students.<\/li>\n<li>Formative assessment is an ideal starting point on the path to personalization; tracking student mastery is an ideal next step. <a href=\"http:\/\/gettingsmart.com\/2015\/07\/from-formative-assessment-to-tracking-student-mastery-the-road-to-competency-based-instruction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Read more here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Implementing Competency Education<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This <a href=\"http:\/\/ww2.kqed.org\/mindshift\/2015\/07\/09\/steps-to-help-schools-transform-to-competency-based-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mind\/Shift KQED article<\/a> explores the failings of the one-size-fits-all education system and the strengths of the competency education architecture using the framework outlined in the most recent CompetencyWorks report, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.inacol.org\/resource\/implementing-competency-education-in-k-12-systems-insights-from-local-leaders\/\">Implementing Competency Education in K-12 Systems: Insights from Local Leaders<\/a><\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Tom Vander Ark discussed the following seven implementation barriers on the path to personalization: policy, leadership, school models, assessment, adoption, student use, and disconnected parents. <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/edweek\/on_innovation\/2015\/07\/implementation_challenges_on_the_path_to_personalization.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Read more<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Assessment and Accountability<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jennifer Davis Poon discusses coupling flexible assessments while still meeting accountability requirements in a recent EdWeek blog: <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/edweek\/learning_deeply\/2015\/07\/yes_apples_and_oranges_can_be_compared_accountability_with_flexible_assessments.html?cmp=SOC-SHR-TW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yes, Apples and Oranges Can Be Compared: Accountability With Flexible Assessments<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Lewiston High School, a proficiency-based school in its first year of implementation, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunjournal.com\/news\/lewiston-auburn\/2015\/07\/28\/lewistons-controversial-freshmen-learning-didnt-result-higher-summer-school-numbers\/1752402\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dramatically increased academic rigor and heightened standards for incoming freshmen<\/a>\u2014and found that increased rigor did not lead to higher course failure rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Competency Education Expands and Grows<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Washington D.C. Education Board is considering movement toward competency education implementation.
