Five thousand learners streamed into 100 (mostly free) summer programs, including digital media programs, drop-in maker spaces, and paid internships, recording their work through badging.<\/li>\n<li>California\u2019s Lindsay Unified School District has eliminated grades and grade levels. <a href=\"http:\/\/kvpr.org\/post\/one-valley-school-districts-unorthodox-educational-approach-no-more-grades\">This article<\/a> provides an overview of Lindsay\u2019s design, discusses the transition for stakeholders, and explores the changing grading system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Movement in the States<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.heartland.org\/2015\/08\/idaho-chooses-mastery-based-education-over-seat-time\/\">Idaho is moving away from seat time<\/a> and towards a mastery-based system through HB 110, which was signed into law on March 19, 2015 by Governor Otter, and the law took effect on July 1.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/education.ohio.gov\/Topics\/Other-Resources\/Competency-Based-Education-Pilot\">Ohio began the piloting process for competency education<\/a>, made possible through HB 64, which allows five selected applicants to plan and implement competency-based programs during the pilot\u2019s duration (2015-16 through 2018-19 school years).<\/li>\n<li>This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montpelierbridge.com\/2015\/08\/opinion-the-quiet-revolution-in-our-school-house\/\">Op\/Ed article by David Kelley<\/a> provides a wonderful overview of the history of Vermont K-12 education, including bold initiatives toward revolutionary change through personalized learning plans and proficiency-based learning.<\/li>\n<li>Nebraska\u2019s State Board of Education <a href=\"http:\/\/norfolkdailynews.com\/blogs\/the-heart-and-soul-of-education\/article_c2056462-4b2b-11e5-b7ca-c3b6fa0abe7c.html\">started a new study committee on competency education<\/a>. The first task assigned to the Board is to define competency-based education.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/ctmirror.org\/2015\/08\/24\/state-still-wrestling-with-long-delayed-graduation-requirements\/\">Connecticut passed legislation<\/a> five years ago in an effort to boost high school graduation requirements, including higher standards in mathematics, science and foreign language, among others.
