It also created <a href=\"http:\/\/education.ohio.gov\/Topics\/Other-Resources\/Competency-Based-Education-Pilot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">self-assessment tools<\/a> for school districts to determine their readiness to participate in the program.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>More Movement in the States<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>A joint education conference of Utah educators, lawmakers and businesses designed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deseretnews.com\/article\/865636028\/Joint-education-conference-focuses-on-improving-long-term-student-outcomes.html?pg=all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">several new goals<\/a> aimed at giving Utah students a more competitive edge in the global economy. This agenda focuses on competency education. Tom Vander Ark discusses Utah\u2019s transition to competency education <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/edweek\/on_innovation\/2015\/09\/utah_edleaders_consider_competency.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in his recent EdWeek article<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The Idaho State Department of Education requested <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kmvt.com\/content\/news\/State-Education-Superintendent-release-school-budget-info-323951661.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$1.2M for mastery-based education opportunities<\/a>, and a $2M increase in technology to support personalized learning throughout the state. Sherri Ybarra, Idaho\u2019s State Superintedent of Public Instruction, discusses accountability and the Governor\u2019s task force <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idahoednews.org\/voices\/students-will-continue-to-persevere\/#.VhU_zxNVikp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recommendations to bring mastery-based education to Idaho<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Students and teachers are <a href=\"http:\/\/globegazette.com\/news\/local\/students-teachers-test-new-learning-model\/article_741c27f2-aea8-52bf-9e1a-101105913586.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">testing out competency education in Iowa<\/a>. Students present what competency-based education is <a href=\"http:\/\/kimt.com\/2015\/09\/15\/students-present-competency-based-education-lessons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in this video<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>News<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Arne Duncan supports\u00a0Purdue University\u2019s competency-based education program, and he is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jconline.com\/story\/opinion\/columnists\/dave-bangert\/2015\/09\/17\/bangert-arne-duncan-mitch-daniels-fan-club\/32559969\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quoted as supporting competency education<\/a> and shifting away from time-based systems.<\/li>\n<li>An interview with Jennifer Deenik, Living Systems Science Teacher at Souhegan High School, by Jennifer Poon, Innovation Lab Network Director at CCSSO, takes a <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/edweek\/learning_deeply\/2015\/09\/a_peek_inside_new_hampshires_performance_assessment_pilot.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">peek inside New Hampshire\u2019s performance assessment pilot program<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Diploma Plus operates small alternative programs for students who have repeatedly failed a grade or are on the verge of dropping out. <a href=\"http:\/\/hechingerreport.org\/catching-up-at-their-own-pace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This interview<\/a> with William Diehl, chair of the Diploma Plus board, discusses the key components of the schools\u2019 efforts to prepare students who are coming from behind.<\/li>\n<li>The Woodrow Wilson Foundation, in partnership with MIT, are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/arthur-e-levine\/the-future-of-americas-sc_b_8071012.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">creating the Woodrow Wilson Academy of Teaching and Learning Sciences<\/a>, which provides graduate programs in teacher education and school leadership.
