news from across the field in K-12 competency education.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Student Agency<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agi.harvard.edu\/projects\/TeachingandAgency.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new Harvard study<\/a> exploring the influence of teaching on emotions, motivations, mindsets and behaviors suggests the development of agency may be as important an outcome of schooling as the skills we measure with standardized testing.<\/li>\n<li>Teacher Angela Watson highlights <a href=\"http:\/\/thecornerstoneforteachers.com\/2016\/01\/student-ownership.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">six ways to support kids<\/a> who don\u2019t take ownership of their learning.<\/li>\n<li>Barbara Bray and Kathleen McClaskey created a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.personalizelearning.com\/2016\/01\/continuum-of-voice-what-it-means-for.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">continuum of voice and what it means for the learner<\/a>, including three stages of personalized learning environments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>School Models<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The Virtual Learning Academy Charter School (VLACS), an online charter school in New Hampshire, <a href=\"https:\/\/thejournal.com\/articles\/2016\/01\/07\/new-hampshire-virtual-school-sets-up-learning-pathways.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">introduced a set of five pathways<\/a> to guide students through multiple routes for demonstrating mastery of competencies: courses, projects, experience, college and teams.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.competencyworks.org\/case-study\/rsu2-moving-beyond-grade-driven-learning\/#more-12531\">RSU2 moves beyond grade-driven learning<\/a> to teach students where they are in their zone of proximal development by designing for deep holes in learning.<\/li>\n<li>Tom Rooney, Superintendent of California\u2019s Lindsay Unified School District, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RUerk1gzJvA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">presented on competency education<\/a> and shared Lindsay\u2019s story at FEE\u2019s 2015 National Summit on Education Reform.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>State Education Policy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents unveiled its policy goals for 2016 and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.westhartfordnews.com\/articles\/2016\/01\/18\/news\/doc5696de42babd5684358942.txt?viewmode=fullstory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">called for a shift to personalized, competency-based education<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/blogs\/gradebook\/brandes-competency-based-education-bill-like-clep-for-kids\/2260877\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A Florida bill<\/a>, if enacted, would establish a competency-based pilot program which would allow students in certain counties to advance to higher levels of learning after demonstrating mastery of a concept, instead of advancing based on seat time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Thought Leadership<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Founding editor of Education Week Ron Wolk <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edweek.org\/ew\/articles\/2016\/01\/06\/to-change-education-change-the-message.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote a piece<\/a> arguing for the transformation toward personalized, competency-based education.<\/li>\n<li>Bob Crumley, the 2016 Alaska Superintendent of the Year, <a href=\"http:\/\/educationnorthwest.org\/northwest-matters\/advice-superintendents-abc-s-leading-district\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote this leadership piece<\/a> on advice for superintendents and leading a district.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Resources<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naviance.com\/docs\/150526_NACAC_ILP_Report_15102021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new study<\/a> sought to understand how individual learning plans (ILPs) are operationalized in high schools, how ILPs are implemented and assessed, and the extent to which ILPs contribute to students\u2019 college and career readiness.<\/li>\n<li>The Center for Collaborative Education is launching the <a href=\"http:\/\/files.ctctcdn.com\/b23705d3201\/c38390b7-2ef0-49ec-9ad4-bcdfbf3fdb92.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Massachusetts Personalized Learning Network<\/a>, where CCE will partner with schools and districts throughout the state to place students at the center of their own education, creating personalized and engaging learning experiences for all students.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/10x.bigpicture.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This resource<\/a> highlights 10 expectations all students should have of their schools.<\/li>\n<li>The Nellie Mae Education Foundation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmefoundation.org\/global\/featured-research\/homepage\/the-connected-classroom-understanding-the-landscap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">released a new report<\/a> on understanding the landscape of technology for student-centered learning.<\/li>\n<li>The Foundation for Excellence in Education <a href=\"http:\/\/excelined.org\/competency-based-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">created a new web resource<\/a> on competency
