Mitra, Professor and Director of Graduate Studies, Pennsylvania State University Department of Education Policy Studies<\/li>\n<li>Frank Labanca, teacher, educational researcher and change agent, Westside Middle School Magnet Academy, Danbury Public Schools<\/li>\n<li>Jennifer Fredricks, Professor, Connecticut College, Department of Human Development<\/li>\n<li>Kei Kawashima-Ginsberg, Director, Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE)<\/li>\n<li>Kim Carter, Founder and Executive Director, Q.E.D. O\u2019Toole Award<\/a>, granting his competency-based program $100,000 to continue advancing student-centered learning approaches.<\/li>\n<li>The Nellie Mae Education Foundation released: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmefoundation.org\/resources\/competency-based-pathways\/looking-under-the-hood-of-competency-based-educati\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Looking Under the Hood of Competency-Based Education<\/a><\/em>, a study aimed to rigorously examine the relationship between CBE practices and changes in learning capacities such as the skills, behaviors and dispositions that enhance student capacity to learn.<\/li>\n<li>67 New England institutions of higher education provided <a href=\"http:\/\/newenglandssc.org\/resources\/collegiate-support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statements of support<\/a> for proficiency-based education.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Student and Leader Perspectives<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Superintendent Keith Jacobus <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swcbulletin.com\/opinion\/columns\/4039722-viewpoint-competency-based-learning-intriguing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shares his perspective<\/a> on redesigning his district\u2019s strategic plan to incorporate competency education.<\/li>\n<li>Sound School (NH) senior and member of the Board of Education Kimberly Sullivan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhregister.com\/social-affairs\/20160530\/new-haven-board-of-education-student-member-raises-curriculum-concerns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">raises curriculum concerns and wants a plan<\/a> to transition her school to competency education.<\/li>\n<li>We need student voices in education reform. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/blog\/student-voices-in-school-reform-mark-phillips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This article<\/a> describes how student perceptions are on target for identifying problems and suggesting solutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>School Models<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Adriana Martinez of Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/edweek\/learning_deeply\/2016\/06\/a_visit_to_iowa_big_leadership_for_student-centered_learning_in_action.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">visited Iowa BIG<\/a> in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and describes what their leadership approaches look like and how they are paving a path for student-centered learning.<\/li>\n<li>Various learning models are integrating more hands-on learning opportunities into the traditional school day to increase relevance and tie learning to interests and passions. <a href=\"http:\/\/ww2.kqed.org\/mindshift\/2016\/06\/16\/interests-to-internships-when-students-take-the-lead-in-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This article<\/a> depicts how students are taking the lead in their learning through internships and community-based projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>New Resources<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The National Center for Innovation in Education and the Educational Policy Improvement Center released: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/0B7tVYXXje07Qa1FOQUF1Q0s3dFE\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Essential Skills and Dispositions: Developmental Frameworks for Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Self-Direction<\/a><\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>The Learning Policy Institute released: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/learningpolicyinstitute.org\/our-work\/publications-resources\/pathways-new-accountability-every-student-succeeds-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pathways to New Accountability Through the Every Student Succeeds Act<\/a><\/em>, written and produced in partnership with the Stanford Center for Opportunity Policy in Education (SCOPE).<\/li>\n<li>The New England Board of Higher Education (NEBHE) released: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nebhe.org\/info\/pdf\/policy\/Policy_Spotlight_How_Colleges_Evaluate_PB_HS_Transcripts_April_2016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How Selective Colleges and Universities Evaluate Proficiency-Based High School Transcripts: Insights for Students and Schools<\/a><\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Next Generation
