{"id":5687,"date":"2017-01-13T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-13T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/aurora-institute.org\/blog\/cw_post\/whats-new-in-competency-based-higher-education-21\/"},"modified":"2020-02-05T13:00:51","modified_gmt":"2020-02-05T18:00:51","slug":"whats-new-in-competency-based-higher-education-21","status":"publish","type":"cw_post","link":"https:\/\/aurora-institute.org\/cw_post\/whats-new-in-competency-based-higher-education-21\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s New in Competency-Based Higher Education?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-7413\" src=\"https:\/\/aurora-institute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2014-08-30-at-7.22.41-AM-150x150.png\" alt=\"What's New\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>News<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/Video-How-One-College-Takes-a\/238394\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video interview<\/a>, Western Governors University President Scott Pulsipher explains how the university takes a \u201ccustomer-centric\u201d approach to higher education.<\/li>\n<li>Experts say <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usnews.com\/education\/online-education\/articles\/2016-12-08\/what-employers-think-of-online-competency-based-degrees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">employers are generally accepting<\/a> of online degrees, but most do not know much about competency education.<\/li>\n<li>Kasia Kovacs of Inside Higher Ed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2016\/12\/06\/study-higher-ed-accountability-should-be-based-multiple-metrics-not-one\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">makes the case against<\/a> oversimplifying accountability in higher education\u2014noting that focusing on any single measure too heavily creates flawed policy, and focusing on multiple measures gives a clearer picture of institutional performance.<\/li>\n<li>Inside Higher Ed experts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2016\/12\/08\/experts-talk-about-college-completion-push-and-what-comes-next\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">foresee a shift toward alternatives<\/a> to the traditional college pathway with the new incoming administration, including competency-based programs, skills boot camps and employer certifications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Thought Leadership<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Charla Long, a competency-based expert in higher education, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/Competency-Champion\/238648\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote an article<\/a> on ensuring quality in The Chronicle of Higher Education.<\/li>\n<li>Deborah Everhart <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eschoolnews.com\/2016\/12\/09\/considerations-cbe-cbl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">explores the difference<\/a> between competency-based education (CBE) and competency-based learning (CBL) and offers 5 implementation tips.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>New Resources<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>ENQA and Erasmus+ published\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/iqmhe.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/11\/iqm-he-handbook.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Handbook for Internal Quality Management in Competence-Based Higher Education<\/a><\/em>, which includes\u00a0a procedure designed to help institutions reflect on the best way to implement an internal quality management system suited specifically to competency-based learning and teaching. The handbook is just\u00a0one part of the larger <em>European Toolkit for Internal Quality Management in Competence-Based Higher Education<\/em>, a later outcome of the project.<\/li>\n<li>American Enterprise Institute released <em><a href=\"http:\/\/er.educause.edu\/articles\/2016\/12\/competency-based-education-saving-students-time-and-money\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Landscape of Competency-Based Education: Enrollments, Demographics, and Affordability<\/a><\/em>, which explains how competency education offers the opportunity to accelerate learning, provides credit for prior learning, and offers alternative pricing structures\u2014all saving students time and money.<\/li>\n<li>The Journal of Competency-Based Education released <em><a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/cbe2.1032\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shifting gears in the classroom\u2014movement toward personalized learning and competency-based education<\/a><\/em>, by Danielle J. Camacho and Jill M. Legare.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Upcoming Event<\/strong>: The first annual CBE best practices conference will be held in Austin, Texas on June 2, 2017.
