In his spoken and written testimony, Kevin Gilligan made legislative suggestions regarding competency education. <a href=\"http:\/\/edworkforce.house.gov\/calendar\/eventsingle.aspx?EventID=401221\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Access the hearing and testimony here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emerging Competency-Based Programs<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsobserver.com\/news\/local\/education\/article131702269.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Two North Carolina universities<\/a> (North Caroline State University and the University of North Carolina\u2014Chapel Hill) are offering competency-based teacher licensure programs to help lateral-entry professionals get the training they need for teacher certification.<\/li>\n<li>Mohave Community College (in Lake Havasu City, Arizona) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.havasunews.com\/news\/a-faster-pace-of-learning-at-mohave-community-college\/article_737010e2-ec36-11e6-8009-d798fc004162.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">created a competency-based program<\/a> for students pursuing a substance abuse counseling degree, and will expand to auto collision repair in fall of 2017.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Opinion Articles<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/dailybruin.com\/2017\/02\/22\/erin-nguyen-ucla-needs-to-implement-competency-based-learning-in-stem-courses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Student Erin Nguyen argues<\/a> for UCLA to implement competency-based education in STEM courses to promote academic rigor and foster student learning.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.columbiatribune.com\/opinion\/oped\/want-to-improve-mizzou-look-to-purdue\/article_1d1e0b68-36a3-5b36-b3db-cb871ad2da68.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This Op\/Ed article<\/a> argues the University of Missouri should adopt promising practices from Purdue, including the introduction of competency-based programs, to help offset enrollment declines and provide affordable, productive, applicable learning experiences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Upcoming Webinars<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>AIR, the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment, Public Agenda, and C-BEN are hosting a webinar titled Making the Case for CBE Programs: Aligning for Learning\u2014Evaluating Connections on March 29, 2:00-3:00 p.m. ET. <a href=\"https:\/\/attendee.gotowebinar.com\/register\/184899753783000322\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Learn more and register here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>There is one remaining webinar in the <em>CBE for Community Colleges<\/em> webinar series this academic year.
