Its Kennedy Early Childhood Center accelerates the development of knowledge, skills and dispositions; uses competency-based progressions; learning is socially embedded; and children have open-walled opportunities to learn.<\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdjonline.com\/neighbor_newspapers\/dekalb\/education\/new-stem-focused-micro-school-concept-lands-in-decatur\/article_b0f340ec-eee3-11e6-bdf8-f756e2d32c6d.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new STEM-focused micro-school<\/a> is planning to open its doors in Decatur, Georgia in August 2017.<\/li>\n<li>New Hampshire\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/hechingerreport.org\/can-rural-high-school-drop-drama\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsfield Middle High School<\/a> is using competency-based, student-centered learning approaches to combat bullying.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.educationdive.com\/news\/leveraging-ed-tech-to-better-serve-ells-and-students-with-disabilities\/435475\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UP Education Network in Massachusetts<\/a> is using tailored supports to better serve students with disabilities and English language learners.<\/li>\n<li>New Hampshire\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/hechingerreport.org\/the-upside-and-the-downside-of-working-as-fast-as-you-want-and-as-slow-as-you-need\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manchester School of Technology<\/a> uses academics to support career training, and uses competency-based structures to ensure student success.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Student Agency<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Student Bryce Bragdon <a href=\"https:\/\/education-reimagined.org\/freedom-choose-transformed-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">explains how a learner-centered model<\/a> transformed his future.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/studentsatthecenterhub.org\/making-students-partners-rather-than-pawns-in-the-change-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Partnering with students<\/a> on the transition toward student-centered learning helps to shape strategies for change and mobilizes them to own their learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Blogs from the Field<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>New Profit is publishing an #AdvanceEquity blog series to promote new dialogue on equity and inclusion. This resource highlights emerging ideas states are considering as they leverage flexibilities in their state plans under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).<\/li>\n<li>Rhode Island\u2019s Office of Innovation released the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.innovate.ri.gov\/personalizedlearning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Statewide Personalized Learning Initiative<\/a>, outlining a plan to scale personalized learning statewide.<\/li>\n<li>Here are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utahbusiness.com\/solving-classroom-problems-top-education-issues-watch-2017-legislature\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">top education issues<\/a> to watch during the 2017 Utah Legislature, including competency education.<\/li>\n<li>The Idaho legislature allocated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spokesman.com\/blogs\/boise\/2017\/jan\/26\/ybarra-move-mastery-system-will-allow-schools-adapt-student-needs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$1 million<\/a> to support the implementation of mastery-based systems of education.<\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/home\/4859545-155\/schools-would-keep-funding-when-students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bill in Utah<\/a>, SB34, would allow schools to keep funding when students graduate early, intended to benefit competency-based schools and reward schools when students complete graduation requirements ahead of schedule.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.idahostatesman.com\/opinion\/readers-opinion\/article130454219.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thirty-two schools in 19 Idaho incubator programs<\/a> are currently using mastery education as part of H110, which passed both chambers and was signed by Governor Otter in March 2015.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><strong>News<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Kettle Morraine School District Superintendent <a href=\"https:\/\/leaders.edweek.org\/leaders\/2017\/?cmp=eml-eb-sr-ltlf17+20170222&amp;M=57807326&amp;U=55913\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pat DeKlotz<\/a> was recognized as a 2017 Leader to Learn From by Education Week.
