Competency education is noted within as an innovative idea reshaping the higher education experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>New Competency-Based Programs<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/mainepublic.org\/post\/umpi-takes-proficiency-based-approach-improve-graduation-rates#stream\/0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Maine at Presque Isle<\/a> is implementing a proficiency-based approach, where freshmen use an educational \u2018roadmap\u2019 to show their proficiency in over 100 learning outcomes by graduation.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2017\/03\/16\/american-public-us-new-competency-based-degrees-do-not-rely-credit-hour-standard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Public University System<\/a>, with enrollment at 90,000, now offers four competency-based undergraduate degrees that require students to master at least 60 competency-based modules for completion \u2013 eliminating the credit hour standard. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.educationdive.com\/news\/should-we-re-think-the-traditional-credit-hour-structure\/438458\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Read more from Education Dive<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/quicktakes\/2017\/03\/15\/competency-based-degrees-federal-employees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Southern New Hampshire University<\/a> will offer competency-based programs (health-care management, communications, general studies, and management) to federal employees through College of America\u2014allowing them to develop skills immediately applicable in the workplace.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h4><strong>News &amp; Events<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theshorthorn.com\/news\/uta-administrators-evaluate-potential-use-for-competency-based-education\/article_4bd15712-0513-11e7-b395-ef8b26a949ac.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Texas at Arlington<\/a> is evaluating the implementation of a competency education program to attract nontraditional college students already in the workforce.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/blogs\/confessions-community-college-dean\/procrastination-problem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Reed highlights<\/a> procrastination as a potential shortcoming in competency-based higher education institutions.
