Synthesizing the Learning of the Idaho Mastery Education Network

Mastery-based learning is going strong in Idaho, with over 40 schools participating in the Idaho Mastery Education Network. Aaron McKinnon of the state’s Department of Education and Laurie Gagnon of reDesign share Idaho’s story and valuable resources for launching and scaling mastery-based learning, including a how-to guide for transformation and a set of detailed competencies and learning progressions.

Building 21’s Leadership Competencies to Facilitate Competency-Based Learning

Continuing her CompetencyWorks series, Sandra Moumoutjis shares Building 21’s six leadership competencies to support professional growth—such as fostering a cohesive vision, building the capacity of others, persevering through setbacks, and creating caring learning environments.

Building 21’s Studio Model: Designing Learning Experiences for Engagement and Impact

Every “learning studio” at Building 21 starts with a problem frame and ends with a culminating performance-based assessment with real-world impact. Sandra Moumoutjis explains the studio model and provides extensive resources to support educators in designing engaging and relevant learning experiences, providing personalized instruction, and giving students multiple opportunities to show progress in their competency portfolios.
