Calling the Equitable Open System into Existence: How Colorado School Districts Partnered with their Students, Families, and Community Members to Create DEI Taskforces to Move from Talk… to Action

Breakout Session - October 26, 2021 | 1:15-2:15pm ET

Colorado Education Initiative (CEI) supported two Colorado school districts to call new communities into existence: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Taskforces. Learn how these taskforces, made up of students, parents, district staff, and community members identify, study, and act on critical areas of interest, including policies on school resource officers, disciplinary inequities, and barriers to access. The panel will include CEI facilitators and taskforce participants, including students, parents, and district staff.

Session Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understand and describe the recruitment and selection strategies CEI and districts used to get the “right people” on the taskforce.
  2. Explore and consider several problems of practice CEI and the districts encountered and overcame during the formation and initial taskforce work.
  3. Assess and apply the learning from experiences of the DEI taskforces in the Colorado school districts to your own circumstances.
