School systems are increasingly prioritizing anti-racist teaching practices while simultaneously struggling to diversify the teaching force (80% white) and retain talent (~20% attrition). City Year’s Teacher Pathways Initiative seeks to solve this dual challenge through a three-tiered system designed to retain diverse AmeriCorps members in the schools they serve. In this session, our panel will provide an overview of this strategy and the challenges, opportunities, and key learning we’ve gathered to date.

Session Learning Outcomes:

  1. Deepen your understanding of the dual challenge of lack of teacher diversity and high teacher attrition faced by schools.
  2. Learn about the potential of teacher pathway initiatives that begin with full-time service through AmeriCorps or tutoring programs.
  3. Understand City Year’s three-tiered approach to teacher pathways aimed at increasing teacher diversity and retention.
