In July 2019, Springfield (MA) Public Schools started the creation of a Portrait of a Graduate to frame the development of a five-year strategic plan. Aligning educational equity and community engagement, this 18-month process intentionally brought together historically marginalized community members and educators to create a community-endorsed portrait and plan. This session shares the perspectives from the community, district and schools, parents/caregivers, and students engaged in this process.

Session Learning Outcomes:

  1. Explore and understand performance indicators for cross-curricular skills identified in a portrait of a graduate.
  2. Learn strategies for equitably engaging community members in designing learning in their schools.
  3. Understand how different perspectives are necessary to develop complex ideas to support student learning.
