Press Release

Statement on Senate HELP Committee Action on the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act

Today, iNACOL President and CEO Susan Patrick released the following statement:

“iNACOL applauds the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee for moving forward in a bipartisan way on a bill to reauthorize the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act.

It is encouraging to see language in the draft bill that acknowledges the importance of competency-based education and the leadership of 48 states that have advanced competency-based education through enabling policies.

With a rapidly evolving economy, it is more important than ever that all students can demonstrate mastery of skills and knowledge they will need to succeed in the future workforce. Today’s youth must be prepared to take on jobs that never existed before and tackle changes in a more complex society. Students will need skills to problem-solve, think critically and ensure they are creative, dynamic designers of their futures. Competency-based education systems and pathways can prepare all students to flourish in a 21st-century workplace and participate effectively as citizens.

We look forward to reviewing the draft legislation when it is released; iNACOL’s Center for Policy Advocacy stands ready to assist the Committee with resources on policies that support successful student postsecondary transitions with personalized, competency-based learning.”
