Family engagement powerfully impacts student learning, but implementing whole school programs can take years and often becomes sidetracked. This presentation takes a different road, focusing on what teachers can do tomorrow to better engage families. We will share a framework that describes systemic barriers, benefits and expected outcomes, and a Great Schools Partnership (GSP)-developed set of criteria for effective classroom-based family engagement. We will end by using the criteria to create an implementation plan.

Session Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understand the barriers and benefits for classroom-based family engagement.
  2. Learn how to use family engagement tools and resources within your context.
  3. Acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to plan effective family and community outreach with families of students enrolled in your classes.
