This panel session identifies the assessment tensions that may arise as learning systems transition from traditional teaching and learning to a more personalized, competency-based approach. Using data from a large-scale implementation of personalized, competency-based learning in South Carolina, we explore challenges and triumphs from partners in the work. Join us as we discuss the oftentimes messy roles of data, measurement, and systems change.

Session Learning Outcomes:

  1. Describe how differing points of view may impact classroom assessment practices.
  2. Anticipate potential challenges and solutions associated with assessing competency-based education.
  3. Explain how lessons learned may translate to your local context.
